A black cricket on a concrete slab outdoors. Crickets in Texas can be handled with pest control services from Bug Out

It’s the time of year when cricket swarms start to descend on Lubbock TX. In late summer and fall, crickets gather in large groups to breed and lay their eggs. Their eggs will overwinter underground, and baby crickets will emerge in spring. Thanks to this life cycle, spring and fall are the biggest season for crickets.

Where Are Crickets Found?

Crickets may show up anywhere, from fields and trees to homes and businesses. They are particularly drawn to artificial lights and cool, damp areas. A frequently-watered lawn might be very attractive to them, especially if there are nearby places to hide, like under shrubbery or a woodpile.

Common Crickets Found in Lubbock TX

Crickets are found just about everywhere in the US, but the most common one in Lubbock TX is the black field cricket. If you’re dealing with a cricket problem, this is most likely the one you’ll find. They are black or dark brown in color and about ½ inch to 1 inch long.

You may also find cave crickets (also known as camel crickets) in Lubbock TX and the surrounding areas. They can grow slightly larger than black field crickets – ranging in size from ½ to 1½ inches long. Their bodies have a “hunched” shape, and are thicker than those of the field cricket.

House crickets are another common cricket species in Lubbock TX. They are smaller than black field crickets at about ¾ inch in length, and are yellowish-brown in color.

How to Make Your Yard Less Appealing to Crickets

Even though crickets aren’t dangerous pests, it’s unpleasant to deal with a swarm if they’ve decided to set up shop in your yard. Nobody wants to step on a bunch of dead crickets on the way in or out of their home. Luckily, there are a few measures you can take to make your yard less inviting for crickets and other bugs.

  • Change your outdoor lighting. Certain kinds of artificial lighting may attract insects – including crickets. Try using cool-colored LED light bulbs outdoors.
  • Turn off lights at night. To bugs, light means warmth; keeping indoor lights on late at night may draw them in. Crickets do not proactively invade buildings, but if the inside of your house looks inviting and warm, they may try to get in. If lights need to stay on, use curtains to keep it hidden from crickets.
  • Seal up potential entry points. Make sure your weather stripping is in good shape so that enterprising crickets (and other pests!) won’t be able to get inside your home or business.
  • Contact the pest control experts at Bug Out. Whatever type of pest you’re dealing with, our team can help you build a prevention plan.

If you do find crickets in your home, don’t fret; they are unlikely to damage anything inside your house. Crickets are more of a nuisance than a hazard, and they greatly prefer to live outside. They may try to eat food-stained cloth, but only if no other food is available.
