Does Baking Soda Kill Bed Bugs?

We do not have any hard evidence showing that baking soda works to get rid of bed bugs. It is meant to dehydrate bed bugs, so even if this were to be a reliable and proven temporary solution, it would not be strong enough to eliminate an entire infestation. Still, many people turn to baking soda to get rid of bed bugs. Here’s how the treatment is supposed to work:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda around high bed bug activity areas.
  2. Vacuum after a few days and repeat.
  3. You might see success temporarily, but bed bugs are sure to return.

How Does Baking Soda Affect Bed Bugs?

Baking soda is meant to kill bed bugs by dehydrating them. When baking soda comes into contact with water, it breaks down, meaning that it would be able to absorb the fluids found in bed bugs’ shells. The small granules of baking soda are also meant to cut through the bed bug shell. Even if this were a reliable strategy to take care of bed bugs in your home, it would not serve as a permanent solution to an infestation.

Remedies For Bed Bugs You Can Make At Home

Which at-home bed bug remedies actually work? Although you might find different degrees of success using each of these methods, none of them will be the final solution to your bed bug infestation. However, they are worth noting. We have seen people use talcum powder, rubbing alcohol, tea tree oil, diatomaceous earth, mothballs, and even ultrasonic devices. Please remember, though, that none of these are powerful enough to eliminate all of the bed bugs in a building.

Why Baking Soda Won’t Get Rid Of Your Bed Bugs

If you think you’ve successfully defeated your bed bugs using one or a combination of the above methods, you might not be in the clear just yet. Without professional bed bug treatment, it can be very difficult to get rid of bed bugs in your home for good. This is why we recommend that you consult a professional about your bed bug issues.
