How Do Bed Bugs Spread?

Bed bugs are slow movers, but they can spread quicker than you would imagine during an infestation. Bed bug infestations often start when a small group is introduced to a new space. They can be moved around in purses, backpacks, luggage, and more.

Bed bugs commonly spread in these ways:

  • Infested college students’ belongings being taken home
  • People staying in a hotel with bed bugs
  • Bringing infested secondhand furniture inside

How Do Bed Bugs Move?

Bed bugs’ wings aren’t fully developed, so they cannot fly. They are also incapable of spanning large distances by leaping like fleas. So, how do bed bugs move around? Bed bugs crawl to travel throughout our homes, and while they are slow creatures, there is no need for them to be fast. This is because they hide out of sight for most of the day in a place that is nearby their food source. This enables them to live and take shelter without moving very much.

Do Bed Bugs Spread Quickly in Lubbock TX?

Thankfully, bed bugs are slow insects by comparison to others their size. So, how do they get from room to room without us noticing? They usually have someone else do the work for them—bed bugs often latch onto purses, suitcases, luggage, and backpacks to travel within homes and from property to property. This is why bed bugs are commonly associated with travel, and why it’s important to be careful when going on vacation.

Bed bugs may be sluggish insects, but they are tactical hiders and can be stealthy enough to spread throughout your house without you noticing.

Are Bed Bug Infestations Contagious?

Although bed bugs can spread between people that come in contact with each other, they are not contagious in the way that disease is. Bed bugs do not like heat, so they will not live on humans’ bodies and spread themselves that way. Although they aren’t contagious in the normal sense of the word, you still have to be careful about spreading bed bugs to other people if you have them.
